Description
This week on Tidewater Talk, Morgan Schottelkorb from Dominion Care joins us during National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Morgan grew up in Roanoke and just moved to Richmond. She walks us through what Dominion Care does here in Norfolk: adult services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, ABA for kids with autism, and Dominion Care Academy, a small private day school where kids get one-on-one help and either head back to public school or graduate with a diploma. She also tells us about Shine Together, an inclusive talent show coming next spring, and her best advice for a family facing a new diagnosis: ask questions and find your people. Brodie tells the story of a Roanoke elevator museum hiding in a storage unit, and Morgan shares her love for the Virginia Aquarium and a tiny poke bowl spot near the boardwalk.
Weather brings a coastal flood advisory and 8 to 12 foot surf through Thursday. Tidewater Tips cover Halloween weekend: Haunted Treasures After Dark at VA Vintage on General Booth Boulevard, Halloween Glow in the Park at the Virginia Aquarium Adventure Park, Town and Treat at Virginia Beach Town Center, and the Mounted Patrol trunk-or-treat on Indian River Road with a sensory-friendly hour. Morgan nails last week's Where in Tidewater, and we leave you three new clues about a place where you can drive two miles with water over your head.
Where in Tidewater
- You can drive across this place, and for about two miles of it, there's water over your head.
- It opened April 15, 1964. It sits on four islands that people built by hand out in open water, and it dives underground twice, under two shipping channels, because a bridge there would have been in the way of the ships.
- It's seventeen and a half miles shore to shore, from Virginia Beach to the Eastern Shore near Cape Charles. A worldwide competition once named it one of the Seven Engineering Wonders of the Modern World.
